2000On the 4th December 2000 a meeting was held at the Greenbank RSL in the Memorial Room, where a steering committee of nine people were elected to form a New Junior Australian Rules Football Club in the region.Steering committee members: Dean McCLare (AFLQ Development officer), Andrew Carter, Alan McKenzie, Fred Meddings, Doug Wyatt, David D’netto, Greg Himstedt, Iain Reed, Wayne Richards and Claude Sansiveri. 2001On the 14th February 2001, Logan West Junior Australian Football club was formed. In our fist year playing out of St Bernadine’s Catholic primary in Regents Park, the Leopards hosted a very successful Auskick program coordinated by Wayne Richards that was the foundation for fielding three Under 8 teams, one Under 9 team and one Under 12 team. Our first season was very successful across the board with our Under 12’s topping the list playing of for a grand final spot, reaching the Preliminary final. Two special achievements must be mentioned, the winner of the Under12’s Div3 Best & Fairest for the AFL Brisbane Juniors was club and team captain Guy Tarrant and the Runner Up was Bronson Durrack who also won the Best & Fairest for the Leopards Under 12’s.On the 7th September 2001 at our inaugural AGM a unanimous vote was past to change the clubs name from Logan West to “Leopards Junior Australian Football Club”. This coincides with the move to Calamvale Community College, the new home ground and its future facilities will enable the Leopards to host games from Auskick through to Under 18’s. This was unfortunately not possible at our present ground. 2002In our second year the club saw unprecedented growth 137%. Fielding six teams of Under 8's in an in-house competition, this was a trial initiative put forward to us by AFLQ in an attempt to distinguish if this concept would work for Australian Rules, at under eight level. The concept was a huge success for our club and as a result we will continue with it well into the future. Our Auskick programs attracted two hundred and eighty participants, which were held at St Bernadine’s Catholic primary in Regents Park, Algester primary and at our home ground in Calamvale. Also in 2002 we were able to field two under 9 teams and one team in each age group up to under 16’s, in total thirteen teams.Once again our under 12’s achieved success by reaching the preliminary final playing off for a spot in the grand final. Our Club Captain Jay Baker, Guy Tarrant and Luke McMahon were invited to attend the AFL Brisbane Juniors Awards night held at Parliament House, all three boys represent their own respective age groups in youth football, with Luke McMahon finishing runner up in the best and fairest for under 12 Division 3 . We also had three Leopards make representative sides in, one from each age group of youth football ; Joshua Russell under 12’s, Guy Tarrant under 14’s and Jay Baker under 16’s. 2003This year was another great success for the club, starting with a well attended Auskick Centre run by Bob Trappnell, with most of these Auskickers joining the Under 8's teams! An great achievement in itself. Once again we ran an in house 6 team U/8 competition with skill improvement being the main focus. With the success of last years U8 competition we fielded 3 Under 9 teams. Also we had one Under 10 and one Under 14 team. Due to lack of numbers at registration we unfortuantly had to drop our U11, U12 and U16 teams but encouraged those did register to join other clubs.Plans for our Club Amenitys Block were approved by the council and school and fundraising was well under way to achieve a completion date prior to season 2004 starting. *The history of the Leopards is to be continued* 2004This year began with the construction of a new club house on the hill over looking the ground and was completed mid season. Our Auskick registrations passed 100 a huge achievement as only one other club in the Brisbane West Juniors reached this target. Our club registrations passed 200 and we fielded teams in every age group, although the under12 and 16’s were combined with other clubs. Our in house competition with our under 8’s fielded 8 teams and continues to be a successful initiative in recruiting and retaining young players to our club. Joel Meddings was our only representative player, playing in the Taipans Under 14 team. Scott Bridge won the AFLBJ Best and Fairest and Joel Meddings finished runner up, a great achievement to have two boys in the same team finish first and second respectively. Our under 14’s were undefeated all season and made it into the grand final, the first team to make it! Unfortunately for the team the result did not go our way, they say “you must loose one before you can win one”. Next year should be the year of the Leopards, “Calamvale Leopards”. 2005Our first full season with club rooms and the Calamvale Leopards Junior AFC Inc. is officially open for business, as voted at our last AGM. Once again our Auskick program passed 100 participants and as last year only one other club reached this milestone. Club registrations reached 250 and we continued with our extremely successful in house competition with six under 8 teams this year, also fielding full teams in every age group for the first time, a total of 18 teams represented the "Calamvale Leopards" this year. There were lots of personal milestones this year as the clubs history continued to grow, with 39 players reaching their 50 games played, 5 players achieving their 100 games played and one player achieving the 200 game milestone. This year saw the first player to play 100 games solely at the Leopards; this was a milestone for the club as well as the player. Dominic Beer was our only representative player, in the Taipans Under 14 team, he was also selected into the Taipans All star team comprising of under 14, 16 and 18’s a huge honour that we are all proud of, congratulation! Dominic has also earned an invitation to the "Young Lions Academy - Development Program" run by AFLQ in conjunction with the Brisbane Lions, we wish him every success. To top of what has already been an exceptional year personally, Dominic was also invited to the AFLBJ Best and Fairest Medal night and won the under 14’s Best and Fairest award for 2005. Our under 14’s again made it in to the grand final, playing for a chance to create history and become the first team at the Leopards to win a premiership. 2005 under 14 division 5 premiers are … Calamvale Leopards. Congratulations to Bob Trapnell and his victorious team, a champion effort. 2006This year has seen our club continue to increase and grow in participation numbers, infrastructure and development; it is great to see so much interest in AFL in our area. We have 18 teams, over 270 players registered and over 85 juniors participated in our Auskick program back in February this year. We have also established a pathway to senior football with the formation of the “Calamvale Leopards Senior AFC”, which will soon incorporate under 18’s football that will give our under 16’s a much better transition into the senior ranks from our junior and youth competition. Another very important inclusion at the Leopards this year has been our youth girls in the inaugural season, the Leopards are the only club to have two teams playing in the AFL Brisbane Juniors youth girls competition, a team in each age group under 13’s and under 16’s.Another major step in our development this year as a football club is the nomination and fielding of two under 12 teams. Our club has come a long way in a short amount of time. It was also a fantastic effort this year by our under 9 and under 10 representative teams that played at the Alexander Hills carnival, both teams after a long day won their respective grand finals and as a result Calamvale Leopards became the first club in the 15 year history of the carnival to win both age groups in the same year. Well done to Jesse Lee under 12 division 4 and Samantha Salvesani under 16 girls for both being invited to the AFL Brisbane Juniors Gala Awards night, only the top four vote getters in each age and division receive an invitation congratulation on an outstanding year. Our infrastructure this year was given a huge boost thanks to Brisbane City Council through funding supplied and installed our lights and also contributed towards the cost of the terracing in front of the club house. We are fortunate to have the support of council through Karen Struthers MLA and Cr Kevin Bianchi; their support has been instrumental in securing grants and funding for our club over a number of years. A huge achievement this year was to see our under 16 youth girls play in the grand final; they played hard all game and did the Leopards proud unfortunately they were beaten on the day. Congratulation to Cathy Selby our under 16 youth girls coach one of her many roles at the club, for being selected as Brisbane under 16 girls - Assistant Coach! |
